Macular Degeneration Information |
|
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness among people over age 65. Symptoms appear slowly and painlessly and can be detrimental to central vision if left untreated. There are two types of macular degeneration: dry (more common, accounting for 90 percent of cases) and wet (less common but more damaging). However, both types have similar symptoms and causes.

Macular Degeneration Education |
Macular degeneration can go unnoticed during the initial stages. The symptoms are so gradual that most people do not lose vision until the advanced stages. Macular degeneration symptoms include blurred and dim central vision, difficulty reading or seeing close objects, and distortion of lines. Oftentimes, one eye loses its vision faster than the other. However when vision loss is noticeable in both eyes, lifestyle is drastically affected.

Although there is no cure for the disease, several treatment options exist to slow its progression. Dry macular degeneration is currently untreatable, but wet macular degeneration can be treated with medication, laser eye surgery, or photodynamic therapy to stop further formation of abnormal blood vessels in the retina. However, macular degeneration treatment cannot reverse damage that has already occurred.
